THE SINCERITY OF THE SCOTTISH CHARACTER

"If there is one thing which is characteristic of the Scottish at least such of them as I have known in my own country - it is that they always speak their mind. They are not in the habit of flattering and therefore if they come with a compliment it is all the more to be appreciated. It has been my privilege to know something of the Scottish Character. The City Clerk told you a moment ago that I came from a country where there are a good many Scottish people to be found. I may say that this is not peculiar to Canada. For where is the country in which Scotsmen are not to be found? Many a year it was my privilege to follow the circuit of Inverness and to have Scottish clients. One day, after many years, when I had ceased to practise law, I met an old man whom I had met very often in Inverness and I said to him, 'I am very glad to see you, Mr. McKillop.' If he had belonged to my own race he would have said 'C'est moi, je suis tres content de vous voir.' That, however, was not his answer. When I told him I was really glad to see him he answered, 'Yes, I know you are glad to see me.' I give you this as an instance of the sincerity of the Scottish character."
