The Right Honourable THOMAS JOHNSTON, P.C., M.P.

Given the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh: 12th May, 1944.

As a mark of appreciation of his activities on behalf of Scottish interests as Secretary of State for Scotland, and in recognition of his long and devoted public service.

THE GENERATION WHICH WILL COME AFTER

"What forms and machinery of government and kind of economic and social life will survive the upheavals and convulsions of our time, who can tell? But I venture to assert that this old Scots nation is not going to surrender its historical continuity and become a region or a postal district, as N.W.1 or 11, a conglomeration of robots without pride in its forebears or their achievements, or without a firm determination to pass on its traditions, speech, liberties and social heritage to the generation which will come after it."
