NANTWICH DRIVE 22.9.32 From Nantwich in Cheshire, an estate owned by the Christiemiller family who also own Craigentinny Estate. Present occupier Col. Sir. Geoffrey Christie-Miller whose address is Acton Grange, Nantwich.

NETHER LIBERTON 1927 Formerly part of Penicuik Road. Named from the mill and community of that name at the junction of Gilmerton Road and Craigmillar Park. It was included in the Ancient Barony of Craigmillar. Nether Liberton meaning Lower Liberton.
NETHERBY ROAD - This street was constructed on the Trinity Estate, formerly owned by the Masters and Mariners of Trinity House. "Nether" means referring to the lower sited of two roads, farms etc. such as Netherbow, Nether Mains and is usually used in place names. Thus Netherby Road is the lowest or furthest part of Trinity Estate from Trinity House.
NEWCRAIGHALL ROAD - The road to Newcraighall named from New Craighall colliery as opposed to Old Craighall, south of Musselburgh.
NEWHAVEN MAIN STREET 14.9.67 Formerly Main Street renamed with effect from 1.3.68 because of duplication. Newhaven named thus as the New Haven as opposed to the Old Haven of Blackness. Consideration should be given however to the original intention perhaps being to name the new village, Newhaven, as opposed to the Old Haven of Leith. See also Newhaven - Part I
NEWKIRKGATE 24. 8.66 Redevelopment of the original old street Kirkgate gave rise to the name New Kirkgate.
NEWPORT STREET - Built about 1855 the intention here would be to name this street as the New Port as opposed to the Old Port, Port Hopetoun at the terminus of the Union Canal.
NEWTOFT STREET 26.1.67 Formerly New Street renamed with effect from 1.8.67 because of duplication. New Street included 1 to 10 The Tofts and the new name was an amalgamation of ''New Street'' and ''The Tofts''.
NEWTON STREET - The derivation of this name has not been found. Construction took place about 1865 and no person of this name is mentioned in old valuation rolls.
NIDDRIE FARM GROVE 14.12.61 Street constructed on the site of the buildings of the Old Niddrie Farm (Niddrie Mains).

The old mansion house of Niddrie, home for the Wauchope family, stood immediately to the north of Tweedsmuir House, Niddrie House Drive. It lay in a ruinious state for many years following a fire and was finally demolished prior to construction of these streets. See also "Niddrie Marischal''

Niddrie House otherwise known as the mansion Niddrie-Marischal. Rebuilt about 1630 by Sir John Wauchope. Another member of this family, Gilbert Wauchope frequently filled the office of Deputy Marischal in Parliament from 1527 to 1535. Lairds of Niddrie were hereditary Bailies to the Keiths, Earls Marischal and Marischal deputes in Midlothian. The family had great power in the southern borders.

Niddrie Mill was located on the east side of a burn just to the north of where Niddrie Mains Road is situated today. "Niddrie" is of celtic origin. Sometimes spelt Nidrof and Nidraig in old documents. For Niddrie Road - see Part I

When Corstorphine was a separate village the ground to north and west was known as the Gylemuir. North Gyle Farm was to the north and South Gyle Farm was to the south of this area. The farm buildings of North Gyle are now incorporated in the development at North Gyle Farm Court.
