The Southern part of Wester Craiglockhart Hill was known as Firrhill where Firrhill House stands. The District name grew from that source. There are Fir trees on the hill but confusion arises regarding spelling "Firr" unless this was a phonetical error that crept in at some time.
FISHMARKET SQUARE 12.10.67 Formerly St. Andrews Square renamed with effect from 1.4.68 because of duplication. Newhaven being a fishing port, the derivation is obvious. The square is of course near the market.
FORD'S ROAD 13.6.35 Part of this road was the driveway to Saughtonhall House. It is thought that there existed a Ford over the Water of Leith but spelling "Ford's" makes it more likely that the road is named after farmer of that name who farmed land at Saughtonhall House, formerly nearby.

Forthview Road formerly Hillview Road renamed with effect from 15.5.67 because of duplication with similar name in Corstorphine. Open fields existed to the north in 1925 and an open view of the Firth of Forth could be obtained .
FOULIS CRESCENT 29.11.34 From the old Foulis family of Woodhall on whose estate the street is built.
FOWLER TERRACE - No information can be found about the derivation of this name. When built by the Scottish Lands and Building Co. in 1880 most was owned by William Rattray of Edinburgh Industrial Brigade General Property Investment Co. The "Fowl" of "Fowler" may be a corruption of "Foull". Through the lands of Dalry flowed the Lochrin Burn which was nothing but an open sewer; it was also known as the Foull burn. Somewhere above Grove Street it was spanned by a bridge called the Foull bridge (from whence Fountainbridge obtained its name).
