| ANDREW WOOD COURT | 16.4.70 | Situated in Newhaven redevelopment on the line of the original James Street. Duplication with James Street, Portobello, necessitated a new name. | ASHLEY DRIVE GARDENS GROVE |
20.10.32 20.10.32 - |
A note exists in Part I written other than by Boog Watson "Off Ashley Terrace which is next to Shaftesbury Park and Ashley is the family name of the Earls of Shaftesbury''. Boog Watson in Part I however, gives a reference of the secretary of the Edinburgh Co-op Building Company Limited as fanciful from the ash tree which is probably correct, and the Shaftesbury name was introduced later in the mistaken belief that Ashley of Ashley Terrace was named from the Earls of Shaftesbury. No connection can be found to associate this Earldom with the Merchiston Estate. The Earl in 1878 was made a freeman of the city on 13.4.78 however. |
| ASHLEY PLACE Newhaven Road |
- | Ordinance Survey Map of 1852 shows ground here as a fruit and vegetable nursery and also shows it as well planted with trees. The mane therefore is probably fancy - from the Ash tree. |

| AVON ROAD GROVE PLACE |
15.2.34 29.6.72 29.6.72 |
Name Avon Road originally suggested by John A.W. Grant, Architect. A check was made to the firm of this name on 12.4.73. Original John Grant deceased and the question of derivation could not be answered. However, the street is near to the River Almond and it is possible that it was named after another river, River Avon. |
